Arrival, Dismissal, and Transportation
Caution: Parents who pick up and drop off children at The Rice School / La Escuela Rice should be prepared to wait in traffic for up to 15 minutes.
Strict traffic and parking rules are enforced on Seuss Drive and in our parking lot to protect the safety of our students and staff.
Car Pool pickup: Students will be waiting for pickup in the lane closest to Braes Bayou.
Students are organized by grade level with Kindergarten on the far left and middle school near the center of the driveways.
For Safety and Convenience please remind your children to look for your car and be ready to be escorted to it when you arrive.

How do I set up a conference with my child’s teacher?![]()
The simplest and best way to set up a conference with you child's teacher is by using the student planner in elementary or by email in middle school. The next best choice in elementary is by using email. Teachers' emails are listed on their website. You can also call the school and leave a message asking the teacher to call you back.

How do I get my child’s schedule changed? ![]()
In Elementary School - teaching teams make recommendations for teacher placement. If you have concerns please contact your child's team.
In Middle School - students make elective preferences in the spring for the following year. Students placed in Pre-AP classes must meet the criteria for that class. If you have questions concerning your child's placement you can send a letter with your child for the counselor or contact the grade level team.

All students should arrive at their assigned bus stop at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time in the mornings.

Sign out your child through the attendance office or front office. Parents should not check students out after 2:30.
A written note is required to the childs' homeroom teacher by 8 am the morning of the changed transportation if a child needs to change from a bus rider to carpool for that day.
Send a note to your child's teacher when they return to school from an absence.
HISD developed the Code of Student Conduct to inform all students and parents of the district's expectations regarding behavior and conduct.
PTO, Uniforms, and Class Supplies- The Rice School/La Escuela Rice PTO has all the information on uniform sales and links to classroom supply lists.
In the event of inclement weather, employees, students, and parents should listen to radio and television announcements for information about the closing of schools and offices. HISD's superintendent of schools will decide whether to close the school district, then make an official announcement based on one of two HISD emergency plans.
