The Rice School/La Escuela Rice
Change for Change Project
The Rice School has adopted a little boy from Tanzania, Africa. You can see the situation his village faces with water here.
5 cents a month for little Tumwesi Robert Katesibwa (use your English phonics to pronounce his name), is all it takes to help him have just some of the things you take for granted like clean water.
And guess what, little Tumwesi has to walk up to 6 miles, 2 hours each way to get the water you see in the picture…hmm )
A few facts about Tumwesi and his environment…
- Birthday August 4, 2003.
- He has two brothers and two sisters.
- His tribal language is Nyambo, which is also the name of the people.
- His job is to carry water – a job that could take up to four hours a day! How long does it take you to get water? How much do you think he can carry…how much can you carry? Invent a water carrying device.
- His parents are farmers
- Most of the people in this country live in huts in their villages. That means…no modern conveniences, no video games, no Wii, no TV, no air condition, no electricity and no indoor bathrooms.
- The country is severely affected by HIV and AIDS! There is no cure for HIV and AIDS, but there is medication…do you think the people in his village could afford it?
We are asking all students to bring in 5 cents on the first Tuesday of every month for this project. Collections will be taken in the morning and during lunch. Remember we are only asking for a nickel from every student will be enough…we have about 1200 students…about how much will our monthly collection be?
